Austria is considered by many to be one of the best-kept wine secrets in Europe. Its wealth of indigenous grapes and small family producers make it a force de jure for those looking to expand their wine love.
The Sound of Music. Mozart opera and Viennese waltzes. Snooty waiters in coffee houses serving sachertorte. You may not associate Austria with wine when so many cultural icons vie for attention, but it’s central to the culture of this tiny Alpine country.
What sets Austria apart is that the country has made its name from essentially one indigenous grape variety, Grüner Veltliner. It also produces Riesling, Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt and St. Laurent, along with a few other varieties grown exclusively there.
