Tasting with Mattia Scarbolo of Scarbolo Winery in Friuli, Italy

It's the new year and since most of us are looking to travel, we thought we would take a trip to Italy! But not just any part of Italy, we're going to Friuli in the Northeast. With its beautiful rolling hills and some of the most kind and generous people, Friuli is a hidden gem. Friuli is renown for some of the best food in the world and the wines are second to none. So come with us on an afternoon adventure to a place many people can't find on a map.

Mattia Scarbolo, third generation owner will join us for an intimate tasting of three family wines. Hailing from Friuli, Mattia studied finance and lived overseas until his late 20's, when he returned to Italy to run the winery with his family. His sister Lara now makes the wines and Mattia handles the business and marketing side. Together they are focused on making some of the best wines in the region. 

We'll taste three Scarbolo wines, with two of the bottles being renditions of the worlds most popular grape, Pinot Grigio. The first Pinot Grigio is true to form in the scintillating, vivacious and fresh style that everyone enjoys. Next we'll delve into another style of Pinot Grigio they call the IlRamato. This wine, made from the same grape changes your perception completely of Pinot Grigio. Our third wine will be Cabernet Sauvignon from the great 2017 vintage. The "King of Red Grapes" plays a balancing game here in Friuli, between juicy, brilliant red fruits and earthy, mulchy, forest floor. 

Mattia will Zoom in from Italy with us to dissect the wine making techniques that differentiate the two whites and speak to the evolution that is Scarbolo. This will be a fun, interactive experience and sure to change your ideas and palates about Pinot Grigio and all wines from the region.
